The importance of workforce: Toyota in NE Mississippi

Work force development is becoming an increasingly important part of economic development. This trend poses some difficulties for traditional economic developers, who feel uncomfortable dealing with workforce issues.

Unfortunately, there's no way out. In the years ahead companies will be locating their facilities and expanding their business operations where they have a flexible and adaptive workforce.

Here's a report out of Mississippi that reinforces the point. It explores the reasons why Toyota chose NE Mississippi.

What convinced Cuneo and Toyota to pick Northeast Mississippi was the availability of workers. In a 60-mile radius of Tupelo is a labor force of more than 276,000, nearly a third of whom work in manufacturing. That percentage is greater than that of Toyota's plant in San Antonio.
